During the debate yesterday, Vivek Ramaswamy dropped a truth bomb that nobody saw coming. He stood there, on an open mic, and really said what everyone was thinking. The response? He went viral.
On Reddit, his 90-second rebuttal to the establishment GOP — where he questioned why the GOP would host their debate on a left-wing platform, with hard-left show hosts, on the heels of getting clobbered on election night instead of choosing show hosts and a platform that asks the questions we want to know the answers to — got more than 1,100 upvotes in mere hours. [1]
But he’s right. Trump, right now, is a winning candidate against Biden, but all the money went to DeSantis, [2] who can’t talk his way out of a paper bag. DeSantis has the electability of a ham sandwich. And the polls against Biden show it, REPEATEDLY. [3]
side note: an excellent read on the dark money in politics, and how billionaires use money to stifle your vote, is Game Changers by Henrik Schatzinger.
What is the GOP doing? Why are its donors just throwing their money away? Hosting the Republican debate on a hard-left news network with left-wing hosts? Seriously? Vivek makes a point. You WOULD never see Democrats ask Greg Gutfield to moderate their debate. You also would NEVER see it broadcasted on Fox News. How does that increase membership at all?
Democrats, quite plainly, know how to win because they WANT to win. You didn’t see socialist Bernie Sanders launch his own PAC and organization to take down Hillary, did you? (I’m looking at you Lincoln Project) He didn’t decide he was going to protest Clinton if she won and not vote according to what she wanted just out of spite, did he? (Cough. Romney. McConnell. Cough.)
But most of all, you didn’t see Democrats pretend that abandoning their base’s most important values, values they upheld just 8 years ago, on things like abortion, the regulatory state, and the adherence to the U.S. Constitution, were not “electable.” They MADE IT electable, stuck to their guns, and didn’t sacrifice every ounce of integrity they had for a dollar bill. Kinda like Trump, who won. Unlike Romney and McCain.
Trump didn’t invent his own positions. He didn’t invent pro-life values. He didn’t invent support for Israel. He didn’t invent ending government overregulation. He didn’t invent non-interventionism. He didn’t invent border security and lower taxes. He didn’t invent wanting to quash ISIS. This stuff didn’t just materialize out of thin air.
These were things that republican voters had continuously, some from as far back as Calvin Coolidge in the 1920s, demanded of their President. Trump simply made the base’s dreams a reality.
So what of the rest of the politicians? Why crumble on abortion when many Republican voters are single-issue voters who want a full ban, not a 15-week ban, except for rape and incest? The November elections proved this. The GOP went with the milquetoast ban and, wouldn’t you know it, they got massacred.
76% of Republicans and 86% of the general public say abortion as an issue is important to them. [4] Democrats knew this. So they ran on abortion. They made it their central issue. But republicans caved. They became, as usual, diet democrats and asked for abortion until 15 weeks, even though their biggest activist groups are hard pro-life. Even though a good chunk of their base is the Religious Right which despises abortion even in rape and incest. And they wonder why they lost?
Vivek is 100% right. The GOP is run by losers. They sacrificed the party’s values long ago. They are so far divorced from their base that they can’t even win state governorships and state assembly races anymore, which used to be in-the-bag even in some hard-left states.
These people wonder why Trump is leading. They stand gobsmacked and confused that a voter base that is pro-life, anti-regulations, anti-war, anti-open-borders, and anti-communism, and wants candidates that are not bought with the dollar would support, Trump, a candidate that aligns with their values.
The party’s base isn’t losing. The conservative values aren’t losing. The party leadership and their diet democrat candidates are losing. And it will continue so long as they do everything Vivek pointed out they are doing wrong.
